How To Have Stronger Willpower

By Steve Gillman

Have you ever wanted stronger willpower? Is there a better way to stop yourself from doing things you don't want to do? There are better ways, and the first way is to redefine the concept of willpower.

Self Awareness Instead Of Willpower

It's difficult to resist temptation sometimes, isn't it? That donut calls to you. What's the simple answer to this? Don't stand in front of the donut! Don't go to the bar by yourself if you want a faithful marriage. Don't have vodka in the house if you don't want to drink it. Keep away from people that lead you to trouble.

People often have the idea that willpower means being immune to temptation. Change that definition, and think of willpower as not only the ability to say no, but the wisdom to avoid tough choices. Be aware of where your resistance is low, and don't put yourself in those situations. Doesn't that make more sense than fighting battles with yourself?

Other Ways To Strengthen Willpower

There are times when you don't choose the situation, of course. Or at least that's the excuse we use. What can you do in those cases? Try the following:

1. Immediately imagine the consequences of your actions. Give yourself a good scare, if you must.

2. Substitute another healthier temptation. Quickly order your favorite soda if you don't want that beer.

3. Ask friends for help. If you can't seem to stop complaining, for example, have friends point out when you are doing it.

4. Relieve your stress. Willpower is lower when you're stressed. Close your eyes and take three deep breaths.

5. Get energized. Willpower goes up and down with energy levels. Play energetic music, move around, or start an interesting conversation.

6. Find causes of temptation, and deal with them. A boring job or life can lead to all sorts of stupid ways to find "excitement." Do something to change what you can change.

Call it willpower, self control, or something else. Whatever you call it, you just want to stop yourself from doing harmful things, right? Start using these techniques and tips.
